I visited Green Lake three times in two different seasons. Winter and Summer. Today I’ll share my real-time experience of visiting Green Lake Vilnius, Lithuania.
Where is the Green Lake Located in Lithuania?
The Green Lake is situated at Žalieji Ežerai, Vilnius, Lithuania. It is in the northeastern part of the city in the Verkiai Regional Park Area and is in a forested region near the village of Balsiai.
Getting There!
We can travel by the three easy transportation systems: one car, another two buses or a cycle. The lake is located 15 km far from Vilnius city center. If you have a car, it’s easy to drive and will take 15-20 minutes to reach where parking is available near to the lake. Alternatively, you can travel by bus from Vilnius City Center or even cycle who love cycling adventure. I go by car, it’s time-saving.
About My Experience!
The first time I went in mid-January 2024. The water was full of ice and the ice thickness was almost 12 inches. As far as eyes can see, all around is covered in white snow and ice. I was surprised when I was walking on the ice where the water was full of frigid under the ice and I didn’t have any idea how the water level was.
If you are interested in ice fishing that place is perfect for you. After walking 200/300 meters I saw some people catching fish with small fishing rod, reel, and some people were also using tents to protect the cold air. Even some people were using green lights for catching fish at night. They used an ice auger to make a hole inside the ice where they put a fishing line and lure.
I talked to some guys about ice fishing, they said it was just for fun and hobby. Some people came in the morning and spent their whole day till evening just catching fish. Someone also got 7-8 small fishes. Can you imagine how guys are crazy about their hobby? If you are interested in ice fishing then that’s an ideal destination for you without any doubt.
During the winter besides the Ice fishing, Green Lake and the surrounding area offer a variety of activities that take advantage of the cold and snow. While boating and swimming are off the table, the frozen landscape transforms into a peaceful wonderland perfect for Ice Skating, Hiking and Snowshoeing, and Photography and Birdwatching.
If the lake solidly freezes over, sometimes inhabitants enjoy ice skating on its surface. It’s a serene and scenic way to experience the lake with the surrounding forest blanketed in snow.
Around the lake, trails are magnificent for winter snowshoeing and hikes. The trees are covered in frost and the lake in view with walking through the snowy forest offers a placid and almost magical experience. Winter landscapes offer stunning photography opportunities, with the snow-frozen waters and snow-covered trees creating a picturesque scene. Some birds migrate, and others remain, so birdwatching also can be an enjoyable activity, especially for those people who love and looking for unique winter wildlife.
Although, winter is more tranquil than the summer season, which shows peaceful and natural beauty. Never forget to wear dress warmly.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
Summer Green Lake beauty waits to show its greenery beauty to everyone. This place is a hidden gem with its crystal-clear green water and gorgeous sandy beach. It’s ideal for a leisurely day excursion.
You may begin by simply taking the scenery and even having a quick swim in the refreshing water. By renting a kayak, you can have an exciting exploration while learning about the lake’s natural beauty. You may unwind and enjoy the sun on the seaside benches and sandy area. On the volleyball court, you can also play a match or two of volleyball. No matter where you are from, everyone can enjoy the laid-back atmosphere here. I enjoyed the open gym instruments very much as well.
I experienced two times in summer with my friends which was so amazing. The atmosphere is so relaxing, and there’s plenty to do. Trust me, it’s a fantastic spot for a fun and laid-back afternoon. You can make some great memories with friends!
There is a place and some BBQ stands for barbecues but in vacation time it’s very rare to catch free stand than better to carry BBQ stand, skewers, lighting fuel, wood and charcoal. We were barbecuing and eating between baths in the crystal-clear water of the lake.
What to Bring!
Try to pack for a day of exploration and relaxation, like your favorite place to visit. The surroundings of the lakes are perfect for a picnic, so consider bringing tools to the picnic like BBQ stand, skewers, lighting fuel, wood and charcoal etc. which I mentioned before. This equipment facilitates easy-to-do cooking and supports you enjoy nature or carrying some snacks or a packed lunch to avoid the cooking hassle.
I guarantee you don’t be able to resist the impulse to dive into the dazzling blue sea. So don’t forget to carry swimwear and a towel after the dive to save yourself some energy. If you plan to hike, bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes because the wooded trails can take longer walks than you anticipate.
Amenities
There are limited facilities in that area while Green Lake is a natural oasis. One or two restaurants and coffee machines are available for taking some foods directly by the lakes. For this reason, visitors try to bring portable barbeques or small grills for cooking their own food and use picnic tables for eating with enjoyment. However, there are some basic amenities like restrooms and sun loungers above the water for taking the sunlight when you take a break to rest. Always be mindful of the environment and clean up after eating and yourself.
Nearby Attractions
Try to visit the nearest places, such as Verkiai Park, Baltoji Voke etc. which would be a wise decision, if you have extra time. which offer you additional hiking trails and scenic views. Baltoji Voke is especially worth visiting if you like water-based activities. Verkiai Park is also home to a historical landmark that boasts rivers and several lakes, making it a perfect extension to your trip to Green Lake as well.
Local Culture and Traditions
Lithuanians have a strong connection with nature which is evident in their festivals, traditions and daily life activities. Although Green Lake is a natural attraction, however, this is also crucial to perceive that how places are integrated with Lithuanian culture. Numerous national festivals in the nation, such as Joninďs (St. John’s Eve), are based on the natural world and celebrate the summer solstice with outdoor activities, music, and bonfires.
During Joninės, villagers congregate along lakes and rivers, including Green Lake, to respect the custom of staying up all night to welcome the daybreak. As a tourist, It’s quite an exciting matter to attend these kinds of cultural events alongside a tranquil lake and enjoy with locals, which is a prized activity in Lithuania.
Sustainability and Conservation Efforts
Green Lake is also one of the many natural resources in Lithuania. Over the years, local governments and various organizations have focused and provided significant efforts to ensure the cleanliness, environmental sustainability and natural integrity of the lake and surrounding atmosphere and forests.
Both locals and tourists try to preserve the beauty of the lake and I didn’t see a single piece of trash during the visiting time around the shoreline nad trails, instead, the area was well-organized and clean, almost pristine. If you plan to visit, I encourage you to try to follow “Leave No Trace” concept, and ensure that the lake remains serene for the next generations.
If you want to seek a calm, noiseless, greenery natural beautiful place and blue together, in a word, I prefer “GREEN LAKE” which has no alternative near to city center and offer you unique opportunity to experience the best of lithuania’s natural beauty while remaining conveniently close to the vibrant of Vilnius. Try to go once time there then you never ask my permission to go again and again. You won’t regret it.
